Jermuk waterfall is one of the most famous natural attractions of Armenia. It is located at an altitude of about 2000 m above sea level in the vicinity of the city of Jermuk, in the Vayots-Dzor region. The waterfall, reaching a height of 68 m, is considered the second highest in the country, second only to the Kazakh one.
According to the legend, long ago on the top of the rock stood the castle of a local nobleman who had a very beautiful daughter. Many famous young men asked for her hand in marriage, but she refused them all, because by the will of fate she fell in love with a poor but handsome son of a shepherd. Every night she let down a narrow rope from her window so that her beloved could meet her. The father, once he found out about this, was very angry and declared that if she met him again, she would turn into a mermaid and would never be able to get out of the water again. The daughter did not listen to her father and that night, not having a rope, she let her long hair down into the gorge. Then the father's prophecy came true - the girl turned into a mermaid, and her hair flows down from the rocks with streams of water. Since then, the people call this waterfall "Maiden's hair" or "Rusalki waterfall".
Thanks to the fact that the Jermuk Waterfall is surrounded by the picturesque natural landscape of the southern slopes of the Vardenis ridge, it is very popular among tourists. Water, falling from a height in powerful streams, creates a huge amount of white foam below and forms a whole cloud of spray. This amazing natural phenomenon fascinates with its beauty
In addition, the waterfall has long been famous for its healing properties. High-quality mineral water from these sources contains various chemical elements that have a beneficial effect on the human body.
